What's Tested

Ca 19-9 Tumour Marker

The CA 19-9 blood test measures the levels of a specific tumor marker called carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in the bloodstream. Here’s more information about the CA 19-9 blood test:

  1. Tumor Marker:

    • CA 19-9 is a glycoprotein, a type of protein with attached carbohydrate chains. It is produced by certain cells, including cells of the pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts.
  2. Associated Cancers:

    • Elevated CA 19-9 levels are commonly associated with certain types of cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer. It can also be elevated in other gastrointestinal cancers, such as colorectal, stomach, liver, and bile duct cancers.
  3. Diagnostic Tool:

    • The CA 19-9 blood test is used as a diagnostic tool in conjunction with other clinical and imaging assessments. It is not used alone to diagnose cancer but rather as part of a comprehensive approach to cancer diagnosis.
  4. Pancreatic Cancer Screening:

    • CA 19-9 is not used for routine screening for pancreatic cancer in the general population. Its use is typically reserved for individuals who are diagnosed with certain cancers or are undergoing cancer treatment.
  5. Non-Cancerous Conditions:

    • Elevated CA 19-9 levels can also occur in non-cancerous conditions affecting the pancreas, such as pancreatitis, as well as conditions affecting the liver and bile ducts.
  6. Limitations:
      • While CA 19-9 is a valuable marker in certain contexts, it has limitations. Not all individuals with pancreatic or other gastrointestinal cancers will have elevated CA 19-9 levels, and non-cancerous conditions can also result in increased levels.

Clinical Interpretation:

      • The interpretation of CA 19-9 levels requires careful consideration by healthcare professionals in the context of the individual’s overall health, medical history, and other diagnostic findings.
